Channel Your Energies Into A Masterpiece

Next time you feel angry and frustrated, grab your
paintbrush and canvass and paint your stress away.
Art can be an effective tool for self-healing because
of its therapeutic effect on the soul. In fact, many
individuals managed to maintain their sanity despite a
life riddled with physical and emotional pain by
channeling their anger, fears and frustrations through
art. This gave birth to an alternative stress and
anxiety management method called art therapy, wherein
unresolved personal conflicts are processed through
colors, shapes, depth and dimension.

A good example of an art therapy workshop is the one
offered by Art Informal, a facility where
professional visual artists, writers and other
cultural workers share their knowledge within an open
and interactive environment using instruction formats
that are simple yet comprehensive. The art therapy
workshop requires no artistic ability. Anyone willing
to explore and channel his or her intense and
sometimes destructive feelings in a supportive
environment can benefit from them – highly stressed
and overworked people, those with severe learning
difficulties, problem-free individuals who merely want
to explore issues within themselves. It is also
especially helpful to people recovering from illness
as the positive vibes obtained from the sessions help
speed up the healing process.

Art Informal provides not only art therapy sessions
but also actual classes for those eager to pursue a
career in the arts, such as painting for children and
adults; sculpture and multimedia art. There are also
classes for creative writing, art history and
literature, and programs for career pathing for those
who want to start a profession in the arts. Its
tie-ups with galleries and other institutions ensure
wide exposure. At Art Informal, a fledgling artist is
drawn from his cocoon and allowed to develop his wings
so he could someday soar with the masters.

“Traditionally, if one wants to study art, he has to
attend full-term classes in an academic setting. At
Art Informal, we believe that dynamism in instruction
is achieved in an informal setting where the students
are not graded. They can freely interact with
facilitators in a very relaxed atmosphere,” says
artist-businesswoman Tina Fernandez, who founded Art
Informal with her cousin-in-law Julie
Jalandoni-Fernandez. Even art collectors can benefit
from the course because they will have better
understanding of the painting process, thus having a
better idea in choosing what art pieces to buy, she

All workshops run up to eight sessions with three
hours per session day. Lessons range from beginners’
level to special and master courses. Classes meet
twice a week and conclude with an exhibit of students’
works. At Art Informal, students will feel very much
at home with kindred souls while honing their craft
under the tutelage of some of the country’s most
celebrated visual artists, writers and educators such
as Salvador Alonday, Edrick Daniel, Riel Hilario,
Gerry Ingco, Vincent Padilla, Rojinie Cortez, (Myra
Go), Lani-Lobangco-Santos, Jose Santos III, and many
