Foundation Reiterates Role of Sleep in Healthy Skin

From brains to beauty to physical well-being, the ABCs of healthy skin may start with the Zs.

According to a US-based foundation, more than 47 million adults get less than eight hours of sleep a night. While some believe six hours will "do the trick," experts now say otherwise.

Just as minor sleep deprivation can affect your mood and dull your senses, it can also affect appearance. It's called "beauty sleep" for a reason: one needs to go to bed before the skin can get to work.

According to Dr. Francis Iacobellis of New York Presbyterian Hospital, "Sleep deprivation causes the skin not to repair itself as well as it could. Your skin ends up with a dull, blotchy, muddy, tired look to the face because you have dead cells on the surface that need to be removed."

He recommends that people should keep regular hours for sleeping. Trying conscious relaxation of medication before bedtime can also help, as it helps to calm the mind. Other "dos" when getting proper beauty rest include adding a tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm milk and drinking it before bedtime, keeping room at a comfortable temperature, reading a book, and having alight switch near the bed so one won't have to get up to turn out the lights.

As for what NOT to do before going to bed, Iacobellis enumerated the following: don't exercise before bedtime, don't try to sleep immediately after a meal, avoid stimulants like coffee before laying down, don't keep a TV in the bedroom, and never force yourself to sleep as it's a sure way of keeping awake.
